The Eyjafjallajokull glacier was the scene in Iceland where the volcano eruption occurred with smoke and lava filling the immediate area. The Iceland volcano caused local areas to be evacuated overnight. Airline flights into Iceland as well as out of the country were suspended due to the events last night.Reports indicate that only a few hundred people were evacuated as the area is not densely populated.
The last eruption from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier was reportedly in the early 1800's, specifically 1821.
"Evacuation in response to the volcanic eruption was concluded after an extremely rapid response," Icelandic public broadcaster RUV said on its website.
Scientists monitor the area for seismic tremors as Iceland sits on an area that is known for many eruptions. No reports of large increases in the tremors from that area were noted.
