The estimated figure of death tolls from Haiti’s earthquake has increased from 140,000. This is due to the delay in the aid of the logistical bottle neck and the survivors who are desperate for food and water have now started looting.
The figure of the death toll as given by Aramick Louis, secretary of state for public safety has exceeded more than 140,000. They have buried 40,000 people and they are thinking that there may be 100,000 more people who left this world due to the earthquake.
The Pan American Health Organization, the Americas arm of the World Health Organization has estimated that the number of people died from this earthquake is in between 50,000 and 100,000 and the magnitude of the earthquake was 7. The figure estimated by Red Cross was up to 50,000.
The UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon has estimated that there are 3 million people who are without shelter, food, water and electricity and more than 50% buildings are damaged in the worst areas. A British woman, UN worker Ann Barnes who is 59 years old is still missing due to collapsing of the building in which she was residing.
According to the UN more than 25 rescue teams are now deployed at schools, hotels, hospitals and larger buildings and there are 13 more on their way,
The Haitian government said on Friday that death toll in Port-au-Prince could reach 200,000. Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime told Reuters that they had already collected 50,000 bodies and the amount may be in between 150,000 to 200,000.
Brazilian Military warned aid convoys to add security in order to guard themselves against looting. UN humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said that despite having lots of challenges peacekeepers were maintaining security in Haiti.
